Recently, we caught up with YEGBOSSBABES’ Amy Bender and picked her brain about all things #BossBabe. From her favourite tunes that inspire her, to how she found her success, she lays it all out in 6 answers. Take a read to get inspired!
1. What is your favourite song to get you in the “Boss Babe” mind set?
This is always a hard question for me because I’m obsessed with music! I hate the quiet and music really does set the atmosphere so I always have it on.
Whether I’m trying to get myself focused to do office work, amped up to work hard physically, or just get the creative juices flowing; music is everything to me! I can never just pick one song, so I narrowed it down to three 😊 Alone by Halsey is my new fav. I literally listened to it on repeat for hours one night while I danced around and worked.
- Don’t Kill My Vibe- Sigrid
- Alone- Halsey
- Fifth Harmony- Boss
2. What made you want to start a women empowerment group?
Kayla, Kirsten, and I talked about it for quite some time, and finally got it going in September 2017. So it was definitely a long time coming. We wanted to create something a little more fun/creative and unconventional than your average business networking group. I’ve been a business owner for ten years, and never found anything that I vibed with. In my opinion, simply sitting in a circle at lunch with people from different industries is boring. I wanted something where women felt comfortable and confident coming in to meet others, learn, grow, and feed off each other (and enjoy some wine together).
While we love the men, they already have their boys only clubs😂 so this was our chance to make our own.
Something so powerful and amazing happens when a group of strong, ambitious women come together. I LOVE being a part of that.
3. What has been your biggest success?
Being successful is being happy and living the lifestyle that I want to live. Being successful in business enabled me to buy a house at 22 years old and do the things I wanted to do. If my businesses are always growing and moving in the right direction, providing a positive and secure place for my employees, and keeping clients/customers happy, then I am happy! Starting a business at a young age got me further ahead and gave me way more experience. I didn’t know what I was doing at the time, but I figured it out and learned along the way!
Before starting my cleaning company in 2010 and product line in 2017 I even had a couple little hobby-business ventures. My many failures and challenges along the way contributed to my success.
I also feel successful in the way I have grown in being a business owner. It has made me smarter, stronger, tougher, and really given me so many life skills. This is so important. Always keeping yourself in check and knowing who you are in your business.
4. Who do you credit your success to?
There are so many people along the way that I’ve learned from. Whether good or bad, it’s all a lesson and something to take notice of. Talking to experienced business owners is one of my favourite things, and has helped immensely. It’s crazy how much I’ve learned from some extremely smart & savvy entrepreneurs. I could talk shop all day!
But my foundation is my family. My parents and sisters are unbelievably supportive in every way. They have been there for me to cry and vent to during tough times, and celebrate the good times with. My parents gave me the tools and knowledge to get to where I am. I always think of how blessed I am to have the family and friends that I do. I would never have gotten anywhere without them. And most importantly, God! The person I talk to the most and make every decision with.🖤
5. What’s a quote that all YEG Boss Babes should live by?
‘Stay Humble, Hustle Hard’.
This just sums it all up for me! No one is ever ‘too good’ for something.
As a boss, you should be doing everything your employees do and MORE! You should always be ready to get down and dirty in your work! Another favourite quote is ‘And at the end of the day, your feet should be dirty, hair messy, and your eyes sparkling’ 👌🏼🙌🏼
6. If you had any piece of advice for someone looking to come into their own Boss Babe skin, what would it be?
Never stop learning. Absorb conversations with mentors. Take all the tools and resources you can get your hands on. Know where you excel and where you need help. And keep yourself surrounded by the right people (like YEGBOSSBABES)!!
