After surviving sudden onset paralysis while on vacation in Las Vegas, Bean Gill was faced with two choices: Give up or keep going. Although she wanted to give up many times, she chose to keep going. Through her journey, she learned so much and met some very amazing people who helped her find her confidence, purpose and voice. Living with paralysis opened her eyes to many injustices, inequalities and challenges that she vowed to change.
How would you describe your leadership style?
Fun, engaging and constantly evolving with the times.
What was your path to leadership like?
Bumpy. It started with my paralysis and then I had to find my way through an inaccessible society. With ReYu Paralysis Recovery Centre, we had a big uphill battle that I faced head on and without fear. Through this, my leadership was born and it is continually evolving.
Why do leaders need to learn about injustices and inequalities?
That they are a part of life. Life isn't fair, the sooner we understand that, the better. When you see an injustice though, it is your responsibility to say something and lead by example.
Why is celebrating women’s achievements important for leaders?
We are habitual creatures living in a curious world. Lifelong learning helps us navigate life from an understanding standpoint - the understanding of ourselves as well as those around us.
How can leaders develop their self-confidence? How did you discover your own self-confidence?
I had to learn to love myself, disability and all. Until I loved myself, how could I expect anyone else to? Leaders need to believe in themselves and have grounded values and morals that they will not go back on. To develop self-confidence, I suggest working on your self-awareness. Once you are aware of your thoughts and actions, you can hold yourself accountable. When you hold yourself accountable, your confidence will automatically increase.
What is the best practical advice you can give to another leader?
Have a solid support system and engage with other leaders. Together we can achieve so much more. Oh, and NEVER GIVE UP!
